Drift
Racing - Walnut Ridge Airport June 4, 2005
June 4, 2005 was the date that the Walnut Ridge Airport hosted
a Drift Race, where the vehicle drivers
are required to go against a course time with points deducted for any spinouts
or should the strike any cones
that outline the required course. Two or three vehicles experienced blow
outs riding over the course concrete
on the tarmac. Between the day's heat and the smoke with the cloud of rubber
smoke coming from
the tires of the vehicles, the race provided a different aspect of racing
to Lawrence County. Participants
were from Arkansas, Tennessee and California of the vehicle tags noticed.
Walnut Ridge Fire Department enlisted Hoxie's Fire Department
to battle a residential fire at
326 S.E. Virginia St - Walnut Ridge on the afternoon of February 21.2005 when
Walnut Ridge's
Fire Chief arrived on the scene and found the residence fully evolved. The
residence was
a total loss unfortunately.
Walnut Ridge Fire Department Meets Matthew Abato - March 20, 2005
Sunday, March 20, 2005 around 3:15 p.m., a white and blue Leer Jet flew
in to Walnut Ridge
Regional Airport following a radio call be met with a fire truck upon landing.
No it wasn't a in flight
fire that was the reason behind the request to be met with such a specialized
vehicle but rather their
small passenger's request to be shown a fire truck during his short layover
at Walnut Ridge.
Matthew Abanto, age 7, from Fishkill, New York (76 miles North of New York
City) was on his way to
Dallas, Texas to the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Pediatric Hospital
the only place in the Nation
that specializes in the condition that plagues little Matthew Abanto and many
other children as well.
Matthew's illness, a fatal condition with no known treatment to guarantee
survivorship, dictates
that he travel to Dallas up to four times a year for experimental treatment
and scores of medical test.
Being transported in a Leer Jet, converted into a air ambulance, from New
York to Houston by
Intensive Air Ambulance with it's home office from Clearwater, Florida, the
flight crew stopped over in
Walnut Ridge for fuel and a bite to eat as well to fulfill their passenger's
request if possible.
Fireman Thacher from the Walnut Ridge Fire Department drove a pumper truck
out to meet Matthew
just to bring a smile on his face knowing what all he has and will face in
the future no matter how
short that maybe. Matthew was driven around the airport's tarmac by Fireman
Thacher for a short
time and assisted helping Matthew into the overly large Oshkosh fire truck
that's on duty at the airport
for a closer look. Sounding the siren and pulling the cord on the loud air
horns of the Walnut Ridge
fire truck was the signal that Matthew's visit with the Fire Truck and Fireman
Thacher was at a end.
108
W Annie HoxieApril
3, 2005
Hoxie Fire Department was called out to 108 Annie, Hoxie, mid afternoon
to find the residence engulfed in fire and smoke. The firemen fought back
the
flames and saved further damage to Simpson's Auto Body Repair Shop
next door.
Morgan
Portable Building Mfg Plant Burns - June 16, 2005
At approximately 7:50 P.M. June 16, 2005 the alarm went out that Morgan
Portable Building Manufacture
was on fire and fire departments from Walnut Ridge, Hoxie and Pocahontas were
called in on the fire.
Pocahontas brought their ladder truck and sprayed the fire from almost a half
a block away with
their ladder stuck high up into the sky. Hoxie and Walnut Ridge fought
the fire side by side on the North
side of the building well into the evening after the sun had set.
House
Fire June 17, 2005
The Walnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire
at the corner of
302 S.E. Third and E. Georgia near 11:00 P.M. to find the house purging smoke
from
it's eves and chimney. The Fire Department worked quickly and extinguished
the fire
before any or much damage was caused to the house. When venturing inside with
smoke
still hanging the charred walls indicated that the fire started some where
near the attic entrance
and attic. The kitchen walls indicated how intense the heat had become with
plastic brick bract
melting where it was hung as decorations.
Nailbenders
for Jesus at First Baptist Church - Walnut Ridge
A group of retired craftsmen and craftswomen came to Walnut Ridge
early in April that are with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention
Construction Missions and the Nailbenders for Jesus, a Christen organization
that
volunteer their time in the Church community plying their skills for free
at different sites through out the United States. The Nailbenders for Jesus
came into Walnut Ridge April 6th, 2005 and formed a mobile home community
on the old Piggly Wiggley parking lot within 24 hours of their first arrival.
Work was started in a light rain and ended with a thunderstorm following
their last supper get together of the group, April 21, 2005, before moving
on to
their next commitment elsewhere to build yet another structure for a Church
in need.
Train
Derailment June 24, 2005
June 24th, 2005 approximately 3:45 P.M. at the junction of Highways
63 South and 91 a North
bound train jumped the tracks at the crossing at Hwy 91 disrupting three locomotives
as well
as several tanker cars containing a suspected bio hazard material, which was
later determined
to be a mixture of corn syrup and a powdered fertilizer that was highly combustable
and a
hazard to the traffic passing by resulting in the closing of Highway 63 and
Highway 91
for several hours. Clean up crews furthered blocked the Highways on into the
following week.
100th
Anniversary of the
Portia Picnic -
July 4th,
2005
Portia has been hosting the Fourth of July Picnic's for a even 100
years with this year marking it's
100th anniversary of celebration that is widely attended by Lawrence County
residents as well as
family that has moved off looking for work or simply to raise their families.
Besides the carnival that
comes to Portia to entertain the visitors, there's also a fireworks display
at the carnival's end, generally on
the evening of July 4th. This year's carnival was well represented in the
few rides geared towards adults and
many smaller, slower rides available for toddlers and those of us resisting
the faster "Tilt a Whirl" or "The Scrambler"!
Of course the Ferris wheel was present as an old stand by that affords a great
over view of the booths and surrounding homes
and city streets at it's apex. I saw booths offering delights as funnel cakes,
corn dogs, hamburgers and of course cotton
candy and candied apples to name only a few tasteful snacks. Following the
much needed rains, the mosquitoes
were out in force and could blanket a individual that might stop for only
seconds to be weighed down from
what seemed ten pounds of mosquitoes. With the recent rains, the dust was
kept to a minimum and the
picnic attendees seemed generally to have a great time as always. The only
detrimental statement I can make
about Portia's Picnic is that it only comes once a year.
Great work from the Mayor, Dale Freeman as well as countless
others that worked and planned this years special events.
The
4th on the 5th - Craighead County Fairgrounds - July 5, 2005
Independence Day, July 4th came in with a light show of it's
own and resulted in having the
fireworks display that was planned for the Fourth to be canceled due to excessive
rain
and storms that passed through the area. Several thousands gathered around
the Fairgrounds
to observe what turned out to be a really fine fireworks display.
The delay of the display didn't cause a lack of spectators nor did the slight
drizzle falling
dampened the anticipation of the show in celebration of not only our Country's
Independence,
but also in tribute to our Troops stationed over seas during these holidays
again protecting
our freedom and showing to the world that a Democracy will work over a dictatorship
to the benefit to all instead of to one or the dictatorial family.
Congratulation and thank you for the sponsors
of the fireworks at the
Craighead County Fairgrounds. I'm sure the show will be on everyone's
tongue for the year to come. Maybe next year we'll enjoy having time to
enjoy all of the displays shown in Craighead as well as other Counties.

Wreck
September 12, 2005
Wreck on Hwy 63 South just a .3 tenths of mile North of the Sedgwick
city limits on the
afternoon of September 12, 2005, involving three vehicles when, according
to speculation and wittenesses,
the South bound silver Toyota drifted into the path of a 16 wheeler, sideswipping
it. The silver toyota
was then thrown into the path of a North bound Jeep CJ7 that T-boned the
Toyota and cause the
Toyota to end up in the ditch up side down.
The driver of the transport truck and Jeep were transported to Lawrence
Memorial Hospital
where they were treated and released while the driver of the Toyota was
transported to St. Benards
Regional Medical Center and was held over night for observation and released
the following day.
Drift
Racing at the Airport - Sept 24, 2005
A group of Drift Racing drivers and fans met Saturday, September 24,
2005, at the Walnut Ridge
Airport for a day of racing. Drivers came from Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee
and Missouri to have
a place suitable for Drift Racing where they could participate in the sport
they are involved.
The roar of the engine, the squeal of the rubber on the concrete and the
clouds of smoke
of burning rubber filled the air with each and every vehicle taking the
course set out with barrels
and orange cones. Vehicles and drivers raced against their personal time
as well as the overall
track time to determine their standings for the afternoon. Chunks of rubber.
plumes of smoke and the occasional
blow outs of tires pushed to the extreme permeated the afternoon.
From word of one Drifter, the event is to be scheduled quarterly to provide
interest in the Airport
as well as to promote safety in their sport by having quality facilities
to race upon.
Black
Rock's 3rd. Annual Foothills Celebration - Nov 5, 2005
The Black Rock third annual Foothills Celebration was a huge success with
their day of fun and
excitement for all those in attendance. Held on the East end of Main Street,
that had been cordoned
off for only foot traffic, had booths that offered food and drink as well
as diverse items such as colored
sand to make colorful sand bottles to purses and games of chance for the
children. Blocking one end
of Main Street was a flat bed trailer that contained a stage set up for
the various bands that were scheduled
to play. Behind the stage and down the block, a tractor pull was in progress
the majority of the afternoon and
even after dark. A day of fun, meeting up with old friends, good food, good
entertainment all for a affordable few
dollars for the day's events and food and drink.
